This webinar is intended to provide an overview of how the analytic tools from the field of health economics can be applied to oral health policy issues. Presenters will provide multiple examples from their own work and this webinar will provide ample time for a Q&A session.

  • Marko Vujicic

    ADA Health Policy Institute

    Marko obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree in Business from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is the Chief Economist and Vice president of the Health Policy Institute at the American Dental Association (ADA) where he oversees all the Association policy research activities. He also holds a visiting assistant professor position at Tufts University in Boston, MA. Prior to joining the ADA in 2011, he was Senior Economist with The World Bank in Washington D.C. where he directed the global health workforce policy program. He was also a Health Economist with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Stefanis a health economist and Dentist. He holds an M.Sc. in Health Economics from the University of York, a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Mannheim, and graduated as a dentist from the University of Regensburg. He is a full professor at the Radboud University Medical Center (Netherlands), where his work focuses on quality improvement in oral health care. He also directs the Section for Translational Health Economics at Heidelberg University (Germany). He previously was a visiting professor at McMaster University (Canada), Center for Health Economics and Policy Analysis. Stefan is experienced in scientific health policy advisory as exemplified by his previous role as a consultant for Harvard University's Malaysia Health Systems Reform project. His research activities have been supported by institutions such as NIH and the European Commission.

  • Miguel Simancas

    Moderator

    Miguel obtained his DDS from the University of Cartagena (’08) and upon graduation; he enrolled in a dual-degree program to obtain his Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and a certificate in Applied Statistics. He served as a tenured Associate Professor in the dental research department at the University of Cartagena until 2018 where he worked as interim chair of the same department and as visiting professor at the University of Verona in Italy. Upon moving to the United States, he started to work as a post-doctoral fellow researcher in oral epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry under the supervision of Dr. Kimon Divaris (2018-2022) where he also completed his postdoctoral training in Pediatric Dentistry. Throughout his career, he has achieved several research awards including the prestigious American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Graduate Student Research Award (2020), and the North Carolina AADOCR Research Day Award (2022). Since 2020, he has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the IADR Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Group (2019-2021: North America student representative and 2021-2023: Director for North America, present: Symposium coordinator). Currently, Miguel is an associate professor in pediatric dentistry in the division of pediatric and public health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
