Webinar Presentation Descriptions and Learning Objectives:
There will be three presentations as part of this webinar. The presentations will consist of the following:
- Sensitivity analysis on Vissim's built-in CAV driver behavior parameters: Connected Automated Vehicle has been configured to VISSIM microsimulation software as of 2020 and its performance is yet to be assessed. This research tries to understand the impact of CAV platooning on freeway uninterrupted flow. Various factors will be considered in this research (e.g. platoon headway, desired speed, platoon size, CAV Market Penetration Rate, CAV Driving Behavior) in the VISSIM 2020 microsimulation software and the results will be analyzed accordingly.
Learning Objectives:
- Assess the impact of CAV platooning on freeways
- Discuss various CAV driving behaviors and impact on a merge bottleneck
- Describe the impact of platoon size and desired platoon speed on the freeway
- Simulation model calibration and validation and the COVID-19 pandemic:
This presentation will cover the simulation model calibration and validation process recently conducted for two freeway projects in northern California. The challenges of data collection and field verification using historical data will be discussed. The agency requirements for model calibration and validation will also be compared.

- Explore challenges of COVID-19 pandemic impacts on traffic analysis
- Innovate Mound Road Project: The Mound Road Corridor
This corridor is located in the cities of Sterling Heights and Warren, Michigan. The corridor is home to automotive plants, United States defense agency, manufacturing companies, residential neighborhoods, and numerous commercial properties that make substantial economic investments in the area. The Innovate Mound Road project consists of reconstructing the 9-mile corridor and examining necessary improvements in the final design based on traffic operations and safety. The presentation will highlight the analysis performed for the corridor using Synchro and Vissim software, examples of simulation videos shown during public open houses, and lessons learned during the Vissim process.
