This panel will discuss and unpack recent research in gender bias. Topics will include tightrope and “prove it again” bias, attitudes affecting parents, and tools for interrupting bias in the workplace.
Speakers:
Torri Jacobus is a national facilitator and leader on the topics of equity, social justice, and human rights. Torri currently serves as the Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice for the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts. In this role, she is responsible for studying and resolving issues related to race and bias in the state’s justice system and to promoting diversity among judges and judicial employees. Torri was previously the founding Director of the City of Albuquerque’s Office of Civil Rights. Before joining the City of Albuquerque, Torri served as the Director of the Center for Self Help and Dispute Resolution for the Second Judicial District Court. Originally from Louisiana, Torri earned her bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Louisiana, a master's degree from the University of Tulsa, and her law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law. Torri is an avid reader and can be found with a book in her hand when she has free time.
Sarita Nair is the Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. Before being appointed to this role, she served as the City of Albuquerque's Chief Administrative Officer, overseeing a $1.4 billion annual budget. Prior to her work with the City, Sarita served as the Office of the State Auditor’s Chief Government Accountability Officer and General Counsel and was as a private practice attorney and shareholder at Sutin,Thayer & Browne. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, UNM School of Community and Regional Planning, and Wesleyan University. Sarita can be found on weekends hiking in the mountains, walking her dog, watching Steeler football, or enjoying time with her daughter.
Chamiza Pacheco de Alas currently leads the programming for Latin America and the Caribbean on an interim basis and is director of New Mexico Programs for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. In the latter role, she is responsible for leadership and vision in program conceptualization, design, planning, management, coordination, communication, evaluation, policy and learning of grantmaking in New Mexico. Additionally, she analyzes current policies, trends, systems, issues and other relevant data to assess the national landscape and identify key leverage points for WKKF investment. Prior to joining the foundation, Chamiza served as chief of staff to the chancellor/executive vice president of the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center and served as the main attorney for UNM Hospitals and as a guardian ad litem for abused and neglected children. She holds a juris doctorate from Yale Law School and a bachelor’s in political science and economics/philosophy from the University of New Mexico.
