This session will cover some of the national and state data regarding inequity and experiences among legal professionals and provide key frameworks for growth as critically conscious practitioners who must work together for clients and colleagues, and toward a more just system. Our hope is that attendees will leave with a sense of purpose and individual responsibility for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in their roles in the legal field.

Speakers:

Dr. Amanda Parker, PhD, is a writer, researcher, and educator from Albuquerque. Her PhD is focused on racial equity in education and society. Her academic work and teaching concentrated on the intersection of race and gender, building solidarity, developing critically conscious teachers, and examining racism in families. She has delivered seminars on racial awareness, gender bias, and cultural humility to firefighters, community safety workers, and the Air Force.  Dr. Parker was the inaugural Director of the Equity in Justice Program at the State Bar of NM. In her current role as the Director of Administration and Training Diversity, Equity for New Mexico Legal Aid, she is working on access to justice issues as well as educational and policy efforts within the organization to support culturally competent legal professionals who serve marginalized communities and advocate for equitable access, inclusion, and justice.


Cina Littlebird, JD/MA, (she/her), Pueblo of Laguna, was born and raised in Santa Fe. She recently joined NMLA’s Native American Program from a legal career serving low-income Native Americans in Washington State with Northwest Justice Project’s (NJP) Native American Unit. With a JD and MA in education from Stanford, Ms. Littlebird’s time at NJP started with a fellowship project supporting Native American students. She brings a background and passion for race equity, working to bring visibility to invisible communities.
